Hate Crime?
Posted on November 26th, 2002 in Media Bias
Why isn’t this murder case
being called a hate crime? It qualifies as one. The 51-year-old victim
was murdered simply because she’s a Christian who won’t compromise her beliefs.
The press is going out of their way to avoid mention of the perpetrator’s
sexual orientation.

You’re not serious, are you? You can’t possibly believe that this crime falls under the hate crime legislation? Please tell my you’re not so blinded by your allegiance to your faith that you can’t see the facts. Unlike the Matthew Shepard case, this isn’t some Christian being persecuted strictly because of her beliefs. The murder, which was a horrible thing, happened due to the escalation of an argument between two people. It’s not as if the murderer, whom the Tribune article points out as being homosexual on multiple occasions, sought out this woman and killed her in cold blood because of her beliefs. She asked him a question, he got angry and killed her.
This is not a case of reverse Matthew Shepard. Both the Shepard murder and this woman’s murder were terrible crimes, but to believe that they should both be labelled hate crimes is ridiculous and shows a complete lack of respect for the vicitms of both crimes. You’re being disingenuous at best, dishonest with yourselves as an attempt to justify your own narrow worldview at worst.

Jim, the first poster, is clearly wrong when he says “this isn’t some Christian being persecuted strictly because of her beliefs.” The murderer has admitted that he killed her because she tried to convince him to change his sexual behavior, which she did because of her beliefs.

Matthew Shepard was killed after an argument in a bar escalated to murder. The media was quick to label that as a hate crime.
