This Just In… U.S. to Try Enforcing Immigration Laws
The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that it would be implementing a new, revolutionary, cutting-edge, state-of-the-art approach to the illegal immigration problem. What is this “new” approach? Believe it or not, the department declared that the U.S. would now be cracking down on employers who “knowingly and recklessly” hire illegal aliens. In other words, they are going to try a “new” program called “enforcing existing laws.” Guess what? It works!

I say they should have started enforcing those laws earlier! But hey, late is better than not at all.

Yeah, but you all start bitching when McD’s can longer supply food for a $1 and the price of stuff at wal-mart increases.

Guy, what does that have to do with illegal immigration?

Yeah maybe explain that.

Okay time for an Economics 101 lesson. Illegal immigrants usually work for less money. This reduces labor costs. Lower labor costs means companies have the ability to sell their products for less.
The whole labor cost issue should be familar to right wingers. After all, it’s one of their arguments against minimum wage increases.

So you’re saying that if we want to maintain low prices we have to let people continue to break the law? Labor costs are just one thing that factors into the price of goods. There’s the cost the retailer has to pay for the goods, the cost of buying/renting/building the storefront, the cost of government regulations…

Not everyone who works in places such as Mickey D’s are illegal immigrants. In fact, many of the employees of these establishments are students, the disabled, senior citizens, or poor people who have more of a right to these opportunities than illegal immigrants do.

[sarcasm] Yes, the Department of Homeland Security has really proven its efficacy in the last five years. I mean, let’s get our panties in a bunch over harmless immigrants instead of inducing mass hysteria over *GASP* MUSLIMS!!!! [/sarcasm]

As amusing it is to watch people wig out at the phantom boogeymen, I rather enjoy lower prices be them gas prices or cheap stuff at wal-mart. Seriously, the US has had poor border control since the beginning and we’ve done fine.
