Rutherford Institute to Defend Brittany McComb, Sue Nevada High School for Pu…
25 Jun 2006 at 6:56pm

Snip: Attorneys for The Rutherford Institute have agreed to represent a high school senior whose microphone was unplugged by school officials after she began to speak about her Christian beliefs during her valedictory address. When Foothill High School valedictorian Brittany McComb began reading a speech that contained Bible verses and references to God and her faith in Jesus Christ during her commencement speech on June 15, 2006, officials with the Clark County School District unplugged the microphone. Institute attorneys plan to file a First Amendment lawsuit against the school district for having violated Brittany’s constitutional right to free speech and equal protection under the law.
()() Where’s the ACLU on this one?  Shouldn’t they be standing up for Brittany’s right to free speech?

Franklin Graham Reaffirms Scorn for Islam
25 Jun 2006 at 6:01pm

Snip: The Rev. Franklin Graham, who outraged Muslims in 2001 when he said that Islam “is a very evil and wicked religion,” told an interviewer for Wednesday’s edition of ABC News “Nightline” that he hasn’t changed his mind about the faith. Asked by ABC correspondent John Donvan whether Muslim groups had succeeded in altering his outlook about Islam, Graham said “No.”
()()You can see the obvious media bias against Christians in this article. You don’t have to read any further than the headline, actually.

Officeholders favoring diversity ignore laws they don’t like
25 Jun 2006 at 6:32pm

Snip: The South was once famous for “massive resistance.” Now officeholders and civic leaders of the North and West are in the game too, this time to push “diversity” programs in defiance of the law. The American Bar Association, for example, has been preparing to force the nation’s law schools to grant racial preferences in admissions that would clearly violate the law. But the group produced an “equal opportunity and diversity” standard saying that no “constitutional provision or statute” could stand in the way of the required compliance.

Classrooms Are No Place for Cell Phones
25 Jun 2006 at 6:23pm

Snip: Cell phones put unneeded stress on teachers and administrators as they exhaust all of their tools to reach students. Kids today are more rebellious, more disrespectful and more undisciplined than ever. Adults need to take a stand and give kids more boundaries, not more freedom. This discipline starts at home, but it spreads to school as well. If teachers agree with the Mayor’s ban (which they overwhelmingly do), then parents and politicians should too. Teachers have a tough enough job as it is and we must make it easier for them by upholding this ban on cell phones at schools.

  • Actually, the previous efforts of the ACLU to defend students in similar situations have failed. While I and the ACLU would love for students to have the same free speech rights as adults, the courts have always ruled against this position, basically stating students are not entitled to many of the rights adults have, particular during school hours and functions.

Usually, these rulings were against “liberal” speech and actions, so it’s enertaining to watch right-wing Christians have their ox gorged by their co-believers on the bench’s previous decisions.

  • I’d be interested in an example if you can find one.

  • HG, why did you remove your link to your blog??

kids have to check their brains at the door of the school. That certainly would explain why the public school system produces so many idiots.

  • Jason, your website (I think) linked to article discussing how school admins refused to allow Christians to wear gay bashing clothing. As look at the school newspaper example, school admins can lord over them and refuse to allow students to say anything\.

As for my blog, it’s just not been updated in a while.

  • HG, I’m looking for an example of a conservative school administrator (if there is such a thing) censoring a liberal student’s speech at graduation or some function like that. Do you have any?

Students don’t have to check their faith at the school house door. The 1st amendment still applies in the classroom.

  • I am really not incline to spend time researching the political leanings of school administrators in cases where school newspapers were censored, particularly given the uselessness of the conservative/liberal labeling system, but its probably happened.

And no, students dont have to check their faith at the door, but they check most of their other rights, like speech. As an adult, I can use the F-word because I had free speech, but when I was a student, I could not, because SCOTUS had ruled I had limited rights in school, like free speech, and admins, like the right wingers at my school, could ban it at will.

  • Just as I thought, HG has no facts to back up his claims.
