This is not about her. It’s about us. She is not “defending this filthy terrorist” - she is defending your rights and mine against stupid and unproductive barbaric practices that will eventually reduce us to the level of the very people we are torturing. A major casualty of this illegal war has been our own self-respect and our justly famous trust in the values expressed in our system of laws, starting with the Bill or Rights.

I feel it necessary to state that I am an American, father of 5, grandfather of 6, a Korean vet and a former journalist. At one point in life, I spent three and one half-weeks in a third world military prison, abused and tortured for knowing something that embarrassed a few slimy officials. Until you experience something like that you will never truly appreciate, to the level I am at, of how sacred our laws are and how privileged we are to live in society where respect for the individual makes such abuse a crime.

Freedom and justice are only as good as what you are willing to share.

As the Bible says, before you criticize the mote in someone else’s eye, be aware of the beam in your own.
