Jim DeMint should have given the Republican response to SOTU address

Republicans South Carolina
In an extremely well written and well thought out editorial, Jim DeMint lays out an alternate plan for solving our Nation’s biggest problems. Here are the major points with my comments in italics:
  • Stop all scheduled tax increases and push Congress to cut taxes across the board so no American pays more than 25 percent of their income in federal taxes.
    Sounds reasonable to me.
  • Cut federal spending down to 20 percent of GDP, its post-WWII average as a share of the economy, and impose a moratorium on all earmarks until the budget is balanced.
This is a great idea, but I doubt it will fly.
  • Keep the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay open to make sure that terrorists cannot be released or transferred into the United States.
Obama’s base would be angered if he went back on his campaign promise to close Gitmo.
  • Protect our nation’s intelligence community from civil liability stemming from the actions that prevent acts of terrorism.
I’m not sure I agree completely with this point.

Reaffirming the Tenth Amendment

South Carolina

As the debate over Obamacare heats up, it’s important to realize that even after the final vote is taken the fight is not over. Even if the three-headed hydra of Obama/Reid/Pelosi pushes “health reform” through the Congress, we can’t give up.  The individual States still have rights.

S. 424, a concurrent resolution, is making its way through the South Carolina legislature as we speak. It has 26 co-sponsors out of the 46 total Senators, but the Democrats are blocking passage. They know this resolution affirming South Carolina’s rights under the 10th Amendment will be used to block enforcement of key provisions of Obama’s health reform legislation. Continue reading

Argument for the Second Amendment

2nd Amendment South Carolina

Here’s a great argument for keeping the Second Amendment and not limiting it any further.

13-year-old pulls pistol, foils robbery

George Dickert wore a .38-caliber pistol on his hip on Monday — the same weapon he says his 13-year-old son used to chase off a gunman and others who he says barged into their Greenville home a day earlier. Dickert, 44, said that while he was swinging at a gun-wielding suspect, his son was retrieving a pistol from a bedroom. “He is the hero in this situation,” Dickert said.

Good thing we have a Castle Doctrine law in South Carolina now. If the Dad had been forced to use deadly force to protect his family, he wouldn’t have been prosecuted.

The great thing about this is the Dad has been training his son to defend himself. The police can’t protect us all the time. We must have the freedom to protect ourselves. If the kid hadn’t pulled a gun, his entire family would probably be dead right now.

Protecting unborn children in SC

South Carolina

24 other states have such a law. Why has it taken us so long to pass a law like this?

South Carolina Unborn Victims Bill Gets Senate Nod, Pro-Abortion Attacks

An unborn victims bill in South Carolina received the support of the state Senate this month, but is also drawing attacks from abortion advocates who are making wild-eyed assertions about what the bill will and won’t do.

The South Carolina measure is not different from the law in more than 24 other states. It allows prosecutors to hold criminals accountable when they attack a pregnant women and kill or injure her unborn child.

Pro-abortion crusaders do not want laws like this passed. They think any law giving the “fetus” personhood before birth is a threat to their “reproductive freedoms.” I hope Governor Sanford wastes no time signing this bill once it gets to his desk.
