Victory for Private Enterprise
Rocket Wins $10M Prize for Trip to Space
A stout, star-spangled rocket plane broke through the Earth's
atmosphere to the edge of space Monday for the second time in five
days, capturing a $10 million prize aimed at opening the final frontier
to tourists.
Lost in all the hype is the fact this is a triumph of private
enterprise over government-funding. How long does it take NASA to
launch a shuttle? About four months, maybe more.
SpaceShipOne went into space twice in one week. Why can't NASA launch the shuttle into orbit from the back of a plane? I guess that wouldn't be as dramatic as a ground launch.
